Hopefully Spring has finally made it to your neck of the woods by now.  Living in a warm southern climate, sometimes we long for a little bit of a season change like the rest of the country enjoys, which is rare.  Our seasons here consist of warm, hot and hottest!!  As we move into the “hottest” part of the year, it’s nice to have a simple sleeveless dress or two or three!!  AND nice to have a pattern that you can just whip up quickly and feels comfortable for the summer.  It makes you feel like you’ve hit the jackpot!!  One such pattern for me is an OOP McCall’s 2114.  It’s a pattern I’ve had in my stash for a long, long time.  It appealed to me because it’s a basic shape that once I fitted it perfectly, could be used in many different ways.

I chose a border print I had in my stash.  I think they call this peach skin.  The print was in my favorite color palette of periwinkle and blue tones.  It reminded me of a watercolor print.  It’s 100% poly, but has a nice soft hand that doesn’t wrinkle.  Washes beautifully also.  I thought it maybe a little warm, but I haven’t found it to be uncomfortable at all.
It’s fully lined with a poly lining. The dress only has a few pieces, a front, back and the neckline/armhole facings.  The body of the dress is lined completely with the facings sewn over the lining instead of joining to the lining.  I liked the way the facings were constructed over the self and lining pieces.  The peach skin is a soft lightweight fabric and if the facings were joined to the lining with a seam, I think it may have shown through to the outside of the garment.  This way, with the addition of the lining, everything is smooth from the outside.
One piece facing from the front.
One piece facing from the back.

The front and back darts make the dress fit nicely but not tight.  The neckline is a simple scoop and the armholes have coverage at the shoulders and under the arm so no special under garment was necessary.
Since skirt was straight I thought it would work perfectly with a border print I had.  Unfortunately this dress pattern is OOP, but I found a few patterns that may work well to get a similar look.  Simplicity 1609 has a very similar sihoulette with a slightly flared skirt, a center front seam and variation on a french dart.  New Look 6049 is also a similar shape but offers a sleeve in view B.  It also looks like it has a slightly flared skirt.  If you wanted to used a border print with either of these patterns, then the skirt would need to be straightened.  McCall’s 6460 is a pattern that  would also achieve a similar look to my pattern.  It has a raglan style sleeve, but the body of the dress is straight and the darts would give the same fit as my pattern.

Here’s my completed dress.  Simple and basic, but updated by using a beautiful border print.  I didn’t leave the center back seam slit since I chose to make it a little bit shorter.  I’m very happy with this dress, but most importantly it’s comfortable!!
