Last week while catching up on some of the blogs I read, someone posted about upcoming sew along’s for the New Year. I already committed to the 2018 RTW Fast hosted by Goodbye Valentino, but I won’t be able to start that until February due to a large project I’m involved with. So in the meantime, I found another sew along, or should I say, “another sew along found me” that sounded interesting. It’s called The 52 Week Sewing Challenge. That’s a whole year of sew along challenges. I thought this would be the perfect way to participate is something, but on a much smaller scale. I probably won’t be able to create a project for all 52 weeks, but I still thought it sounded fun. This sew along has a preset project for each week of the year. My thought was that I could select those that I found interesting and jump in when I wanted.
Here’s the weekly schedule for the entire year:
My personal focus for each of these challenges that I choose to participate in, will be a quick project. This week was of interest because it was to create something “warm & soft”. We’ve been getting some cold weather down here in South Florida, so a cozy infinity scarf was the perfect project. I even had the perfect soft plaid flannel for this project which means it was sewn from stash!! Bonus!! Check and check!!
I’ve never made an infinity scarf so I headed off to Pinterest to see if I could find a tutorial for some guidance. Low and behold, there were more tutorials on how to make an infinity scarf than I could ever read in a lifetime. Didn’t really find one that I thought would work for me. I wanted to cut my plaid on the bias because I thought it would be a fresh look. I ended up just winging it and cutting my fabric on the bias ending up with a piece 19″ by 61″. I wanted to be able to wear it twice around my neck and that seemed like the perfect dimension from the tutorials I found. I cut my fabric on the bias and then had to piece it on one corner following the plaid. I needed to do this to make those dimensions work, but it’s unnoticeable since I matched the plaid perfectly. Folded it in half long ways, wrong side out and stitched it closed but left both ends open. Turned it right side out then joined the short edges as much as I could. Left about a 3″ opening to stitch closed. This was a quick project and took me about an hour.
Here’s the finished scarf!! I will take better pictures of me wearing it soon. I’m very happy with the way it turned out and it is very soft and warm. Week 1 challenge complete!
