On Day 5, I took a couple steps backwards on my first quilt. As I was laying out my panels for the sides of the quilt, I realized I had placed the light aqua bubble print next to the darker aqua coral print. That placement really bothered me. I mulled it over for days trying to think of how I could fix it without creating alot of extra work. See, these are the things that an experienced quilter would have thought of when planning, but I didn’t think of at all. However, I did come up with a solution that I liked with minimal ripping of seams. I only needed to take out 3 seams, one on each of the sections. Luckily I noticed this before I started to cut my long strips into the 18 1/4″ sections for the sides. All I had to do was take out one seam between the shell print and the ivory solid and turn it around. It was the perfect solution and only took me a little time to press, rip the seam, press again, resew the seam and then press again. Ok, it took me a little longer than that, but it was worth it. I like the pattern configuration so much better now.
Here’s what the original fabric print configuration looked like. It looked fine until I placed the 2 shades of aqua next to one another. The photo on the left is the original fabric print configuration. The photo on the right shows what it looked like when I went to join the strips together. The light and darker aquas didn’t look so great together. Since the colors were close in color, it looked more like a wide strip was inserted instead of 3″ separate strips. Below is the result of taking out one seam and turning the fabric around and then resewing.
I really felt that this fabric print configuration was so much more flattering to the repeat. It just seems to flow continuously whereas the other seemed to have a “heavy spot” with the 2 similar colors. I’m so glad I chose to take the time to figure out something better. Makes me more excited to get this quilt top finished and on to learning the next steps to make this into a real quilt. Until next time…..thanks for sharing your quilting tips and following along on my progress.
