Hi Everyone! It’s been a while! I’ve been taking some time away on a little break from sewing. With school back in session and summer coming to an end, it was time for me to get back to sewing and get a few new pieces made up for Fall. I couldn’t help but be lured back when I saw a new pattern test announcement from Sonia Estep Designs. The “sneak peek” had me WOWED I couldn’t help but jump in with both feet.
Here it is! The Hazel Skirt!

One of the things that excited me about this tester call, was that this pattern was designed for woven fabrications. I’ve tested quite a few patterns, but they’ve all been for stretch knits. I have loads of woven in my stash and welcomed this opportunity. As soon as I saw the fabric suggestions for this skirt, I knew exactly what I wanted to use. This Beautiful Paisley Challis from my stash!! It has just the right amount of drape and swing for this half circle skirt.

Another exciting feature of this design is that it incorporated functional buttons. This ticked another inspiration box for me because I knew I had the perfect buttons for this skirt as well. When I pulled them out and placed them on the print, I knew I hit a little snag. The pink sparkly buttons didn’t show up well on the printed fabric. So I got creative and decided that I would make a contrasting waistband and front placket. I chose a plain back crepe and it had just the perfect amount of body with a fusible stabilizer. It was the perfect solution and I couldn’t be happier. These buttons really “pop” on the solid black and bring this skirt to a new level.

This skirt pattern has only a few pieces and I would say it’s beginner friendly. If I lost your interest when I mentioned that this skirt pattern was made for woven fabrics, don’t be discouraged. Sonia thought of that and included an option for knits with or without a faux front placket. This design comes in 3 lengths also. A fun flirty mini, knee and midi lengths. I chose to make the knee length, but did need to shorten it by 1 1/2″. The construction is very simple as well. I chose to stabilize my hem and give it a hand finish. I also hand sewed the waistband closed on the inside to give it an invisible finish. These steps can be done by machine as well. This pdf pattern includes a full sewing tutorial to help you along if needed.
