I recently shared a Basic Serger Tips and Tricks post for those that are new to serging. With this being National Serger Month, I’m continuing on with teaching how to Thread the Serger. In this video, I show how to thread the 2 needle 4 thread Ultra-Stretch Safety Mock Stitch. This is the perfect stitch for constructing all the Beautiful Knits everyone is using for there T’s and cute tops!! It’s also perfect for your leggings as well because this stitch allows the seams to give WITHOUT popping like a conventional machine single needle stitch.
In this video I show exactly how to thread each thread on the Singer Pro Finish Serger. I made this video more than 4 years ago since my machine didn’t come with an instructional video. Here’s the original blog post, Serger Basics with more pictures and information about the Singer Pro Finish Serger to help get you started.
I’d like to share that when I made the video, I didn’t realize there was an “order” to threading. I’ve used a serger since 1986, both industrial and home models and I’ve never threaded in any particular order. The video shows me threading the lower looper first, then the upper looper. Many argue that it needs to be in the reverse order and that’s fine with me. If you feel threading the upper then the lower looper is important, by all means do so. I’ve never found that it’s made a difference, and feel it’s more about where the machine is in it’s rotation when being threaded. It’s also important to leave a long enough tail under the presser foot when starting to chain. If the tail isn’t long enough, the serger may come unthreaded as it goes through it’s rotation and that’s frustrating. The truth is that this video has helped countless people on their way to successful threading and I’m happy to have helped them all. For me, it’s all about helping people let go of their fear of the serger and help them on their way to creating the things they want to create.
I hope you find this video helpful to get you on your way to using your new serger and being successful!! Believe me! A whole new world of sewing is getting ready to open up for YOU!
