I will be teaching you how to sewing using the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 in this series of Videos on my Youtube Channel as well as Photo Illustrations here on my blog. This machine has received good review after good review, so I thought I would show how feature rich this machine is for a rather low price point. I will be showing in the series the simple operation of the machine, utility sewing, decorating stitching, the variety of buttonholes and using the built in alphabets.
I’ve owned the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 for about a year and a half now. This is a midsized machine with a nice amount of power. It sews smoothly and quietly. It has the option to sew using the on/off button or with the foot pedal.  It’s very easy to thread as well as wind the bobbin. It uses class 15J bobbins which are available at many retailers. It has a built in needle threader and cutter. There is a very nice selection of utility stitches as well as deco stitches. The buttonholes are one of the nicest features. It has one that’s not even on my Singer Quantum L-500 which is a larger machine more powerful machine at a much higher price point. I purchased it mainly because I LOVED the specialty sewing feet “value added package” the machine came with. I’ve already done reviews on some of these feet. Just click on the highlighted “specialty feet” links to read the reviews. All of these specialty feet require the use of the coordinating ankle which is included in this package.
This video helped me figure out how to use my needle threader. I always avoided it. Now I can finally use it. Thanks
Congratulations on producing your video, Roxanne… you did a great job! I own the 9940 which is very similar (yours has a few upgrades, I imagine, as it is newer) and use it as my main machine. I would never give up my needle threader LOL.
I wanted you to know that your videos are enjoyed not just by beginners; I have been sewing on numerous models for about 45 years, but since I learned from my Mum, who was semi-literate, I didn't always understand the "whys" of the complex beast that is the modern sewing machine. Now that I am an internet user, I enjoy learning more about one of my favorite hobbies. So I look forward to enjoying more of your videos!
Glad the video helped you use this useful feature of your machine!!
Thanks Monique! I appreciate your kind remarks and am glad that you enjoyed the video!!
I'm wondering if you made an error about bobbin size, because I have this exact machine and my instructions are to use size 15 Bobbins. You stated in your video to only use size 15J. So now I'm confused. I purchased extra Bobbins size 15 and have no problems.
Thank you
No, I didn't make a mistake. The correct bobbin size is 15J. Glad you're not having problems with you machine, however Class 15 is NOT recommended for the Singer 9960.
Please click on this link. It will take you to Singer's official 9960 page and it states Class 15J. I hope I cleared up any confusion.

Thank you for your reply. After I posted I visited Singer's 9960 page and it did state 15J. However. my manual that came with the machine just states "class 15 bobbins" so that is why I purchased that type. Very confusing sometimes when one reads or hears two different bobbin types. The site where I purchased my 9960 also states size 15 bobbin in the description. My Singer EM XL400 does state to use 15J.
Would you please tell me which page you found that information on in the manual? I've looked and couldn't find it. Thanks.
I do believe the bobbins that came with the machine are 15J. They are straight on the sides and class 15 is slightly rounded.
Okay I re-read the manual and sorry to make an error. On page 30 it states. NOTES: Use Singer Bobbins Only. I sure wish the manual was more specific. My error and apologies . I guess my brain is stuck on size 15 bobbins due to the description info from the site I purchased it from. LOL
Mary Ann aka "Anonymous".
Hi Mary Ann! Sorry for the confusion. I would go by what Singer says on it's page. I think that's the most reliable information. Can you compare your Class 15's with the ones that came with the machine, please?? Thanks!!
I have been using my machine the9960 for only 1 day i followed all your instructions to the letter. so everything is going very nice and was so proud then in the middle of a seam for no reason that i could findit made a horrible noise? i stopped took my project off the machine. looked for the problem nothing? turned my project over..there it was a waded tangled mess for about 9 inches? any ideas?
I would suggest you rethread your machine and make sure your bobbin is in correctly. Sorry, but it's very difficult to diagnosis issues you may be having. If you're still having problem, please call Singer and go through their troubleshooting suggestions.
did as you sugested re threaded several times went through the trouble shooting. guess i am calling singer thanks
I'm thankful for these videos!
I am so happy to have found your blog with info about my Singer Quantum. I read with interest the bobbin controversy because as you know after you open the package then you have no idea what size the bobbin is. As I have several machines (Brother and singer) I was in a dilemma about which bobbins went where and on which machine. The statement you made about the 15J having straight sides cleared that up for me once and for all. Also, I have been having trouble winding my bobbins. The thread tip i was holding up through the hole would leave too much sticking out after I clipped it. I guess I have been threading the bobbin the wrong way. I was putting the thread through the hole from the inside and now i know I need to do it from the outside. Does this make sense? Also, I can now use my auto threader which i have never been able to work. Thanks for your videos.
Hi Cindy! Glad I was able to clear up the bobbin controversy for you! When winding a bobbin, I hold onto that threaded tail until it snaps off. The threader takes a little practice. Glad you got it!
Roxanne: I recently purchased the 9960. I have one problem. It is the needle threader. Lately Ive noticed that the threader would not loop thru the needle. Using a magnifyer the hook on the threader was above the needle hole. So what I had to do was was to lower the threader tube from the original position which is not natural to the machine,in order for the threader to work properly. I keep wondering if you have ever run into this problem. I am beside myself using the machine this way. I even went to Sewing Parts Online and bought a replacement threader, same problem, I still had to drop the threader. Are my needles too long? Something is not right. Can you help?
Hi Seymour. Could be your needles. Other needle brands may not line up perfectly with the threader. Are you using Singer brand needles and this is happening? Are you sure the needle is inserted all the way up into the shaft?
hi, thanks for the video . I just bought this sewing machine and learning how to use it. so your video is really helpful . I will try to learn it slowly
Congrat’s on your new 9960! Hope you love it. Glad you’re finding the videos helpful!
Wow – the bobbin thing is still confusing! I was getting ready to order this machine and in the comments section of the purchase page someone said to make sure to get Class 15 bobbins and NOT 15J. This made me go to the Singer website and it does say to use 15 (not 15J). Below are the links that show the machines recommended for Class 15 and Class 15J. The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is listed as recommended for Class 15 here:
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/detail/2558/class-15-bobbins-transparent-qty-4#type-compatible_machines
and if you look at the machines for the 15J bobbins, it does NOT list the Quantum Stylist 9960: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/detail/2550/class-15j-bobbins-transparent-qty-3#type-compatible_machines
Hi Cindy. I’ve owned my machine for almost 6 years. It’s a second generation SQS9960. My machine came with Class 15J bobbins. I use Class 15J bobbins. I’ve only ever used Class 15J bobbins. If Singer decided to change the bobbin size on later machines, I don’t know. I’ve never had an issue with using Class 15J bobbins.
I was getting frustrated with the needle threader on the quantum 9960 until I watched your close up video. It was so clear that I can now do it. The tip on the long manual needle threader also is very good. Thank you so much!
Hi Fatmatta! Glad you found the video helpful. Happy Sewing!!
