One of my favorite features on my newer sewing machines, is the Auto Thread Cutting Feature. This feature can spoil you in heartbeat once you get used to using it. I love it for certain applications, but not all applications. When I started to sew, this wasn’t an option on conventional home sewing machines. I learned how to sew by holding my threads in the back of the machine as I started off each new seam. I still, for the most part use this method, however using the auto cutter leaves a shorter tail in the back that can’t be held when starting to sew a new line of stitching.
There’s the alternative to using the auto cutter on the Singer 9960 that you may not even be aware of. It’s the on board manual cutter. Here’s a video of how to use this cutter and it’s the one that I use most often.
This convenient little tool is located on the head of the machine on the lower left side. It’s easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it, so I thought I’d point it out.
It’s very easy to use as I show in the video. It leaves the perfect amount of tail to hold securely when starting to sew. I got used to using this tool many years ago on an older industrial machine. It made sense that an sewing machine operator would use this tool instead of picking up a pair of scissors or snippers to cut threads quickly. Kept her hands free to speed up production. I’m glad they’ve added them to conventional home sewing machines for us all to have a choice.
This video also shows a few other basic sewing tips and tricks that I thought were worth sharing:
- What is a sewing leader, and how do I use it?
- The proper way to remove a spool of thread from the sewing machine.
- The best position to leave your sewing machine presser foot when not in use.
- Always unplug your sewing machine when not in use.
I hope you find this video helpful to learn about the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960’s manual and auto cutter’s. They’re both great features and should be used and enjoyed. Let me know what you think of the tips and tricks I shared in the video and if you use them or if they’re new to you. Always enjoy your comments and feedback. Thanks for watching!!
