The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 came with presser foot “A” installed when it arrived.  This foot is known as the General Purpose Foot or All Purpose Foot. It’s a very versatile foot and can be used for a multitude of different utility applications from topstitching to elastic insertion.  If you’ve ever wondered what the little black button on the side of the foot was used for, here’s a brief video showing how to use it.  It can make sewing over thick areas a breeze, provided the proper needle and thread are used in conjunction with this foot.

Here’s a photo from the manual of the accessories that came with the Singer 9960.  The General Purpose Foot or Foot “A” is pictured in the lower right side of this photo as #24.  It’s the most frequently used foot for all regular utility sewing applications.  It has a clear area in the front of the foot to visually see your work more clearly while sewing.

It’s a great idea to spend some time exploring all the presser feet that came with the Singer 9960.  Here’s a link to all my sewing machine presser feet videos for quick reference:  Sewing Machine Presser Feet.  Each of the photos has a link to the video showing how to use the foot.  Many also have articles giving more details on using each foot with additional photos.  The Singer QS 9960 came with a wide variety of presser feet and it’s worth the time to learn how to use each one to broaden your sewing skills.

The tool I show how to use in this video is called the “Clearance Plate or Hump Jump”.  It was part of the “bonus foot collection” that came packaged separately with the Singer 9960.  It’s pictured in the photo on the right, bottom row on the left. It’s the odd shaped gray plastic piece.  It has a dual function that you may not be aware of.  This tool helps you sew over humps. While sewing in a continuous line, transitioning from 1 or 2 layers of fabric up to 3 or more layers, it easier when using this tool. In the video, I give a demo of how this tool is used sewing on heavy denim.  Sewing can be difficult in these areas and I explain why in the video.  I show how to be successful in negotiating over these heavier areas.  This information can be helpful for bag making, upholstery sewing, or any other heavier projects.  There’s also another little bonus to this tool shown in the video.

I hope if you’ve ever wondered what that button on the side of presser foot “A” was used for or what that strange looking plastic piece that came with the 9960 was used for, that this video helps.  Once you understand how to use these “super power” tools to negotiate  over those thicker seams and areas, you will feel Powerful!!
