Hi Everyone!  It’s been a long while since I put out a new video featuring the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960, but I’m back!  This is part 18 in my video series where I show “how to” use this wonderful machine on my YouTube Channel. In this segment in the series, I show how to use 3 different sewing machine guides.

The first seam guide featured in this video came with the Singer 9960 and is a screw on attachment.  It’s noted in the graphic  below as #10, seam guide and screw.  It’s easy to use and is able to be set to a variety of widths.   Screw on Seam Guide:

Many machines come with an adjustable screw-on seam guide as an added bonus.  This guide can be set to exactly the desired seam allowance either along a pre-marked guide on the machine’s needle plate or by using an adjustable hem marker to find the perfect spot. It’s a great choice and helps new sewist’s learn to guide seam allowances evenly.  It offers a definite raised barrier which is easy to follow whereas tape offers no barrier to follow against.  Accurate seam allowances make all the difference when fitting a garment perfectly when even the smallest deviation can be heartbreaking to a final garment’s fit.

The other guides I show in this video are inexpensive additional purchases.  One is a Magnetic Seam Guide and the other is an Adjustable Guide Presser Foot.  Both are useful investments for different sewing operations.  One example is using a seam guide while top stitching.  This ensures your stitches will be perfectly even and professional looking.

Magnetic Seam Guide:

Many years ago, my Auntie Ann introduced me to a magnetic seam guide.  I had a machine with no seam guide markings on the needle plate so this tool was essential to  help me as I learned sew.  This machine was older and not electronic or computerized either.  Later I received an electronic machine and continued to use the magnetic seam guide. Later, I found out that some people believe using a magnetic guide on a computerized machine is a BIG no no.  Actually, I never had any problems, but there are other alternatives if you feel uncomfortable with a magnetic choice.  No worries if you’re learning to sew and you’re fearful to use a magnetic seam guide on your fancy new computerized machine.  I get it.  The good news is that you have options!!

Snap on Presser Foot with Adjustable Seam Guide:

This foot is my new favorite of the 3 choices I’m sharing today.  It’s a snap on foot and was actually what inspired this new video and post.  One of my followers asked me specifically about this foot so I did a little research and purchased one for myself to check it out.  Had no idea it even existed and found it to be a great addition of my sewing machine foot collection.

Adjustable Seam Gauge:

Another great tool to add to your sewing basket is an Adjustable Hem/Seam Gauge.  It’s the tool I show in the video that I use to measure the distance from the needle to set each seam guide.  There are many uses for this tool.  From measuring hems, to setting button distances.  It’s inexpensive and a must have in my opinion to make a variety of small measuring tasks simple.
