For the month of March in my Facebook Group, instead of a Sew-Along, we took a poll and selected a “monthly sewing theme”.  The theme this month was “Bags”.  Any kind of bag was acceptable and we had great participation with over 30 bags in our “Bag Gallery”.  Each one was different and it was a great way for those in our group to try something different.  One bag stuck out for me and the maker was kind enough to share the source.  It was the “Clematis Wristlet” from Blue Calla Patterns.  If you’re not familiar with that brand please check them out.  This was a new pattern brand for me and the pattern was FREE.  Click HERE to get your FREE copy today.  This pattern also included a full color picture tutorial.

My Clematis is actually an upcycled project, meaning I took a used item apart to make something new.  The fabrics came from a Halloween witches hat that was given to me.  I knew I would eventually do something with it and when I saw the wristlet pattern, I dove in.  As some of you know from my previous upcycled project articles I’ve written, I have one prerequisite when I sew an upcycled project.  It can’t look anything like it did in it’s former life.

So here’s my cute Mermaid’s Wristlet!!

Would you have ever guessed this Mermaid Wristlet was ever a Halloween witches hat??  I think NOT!!  The pointy part of the hat was made out of a shimmery sequin fabrication with shades of blue, purple and green.  The hat was lined in felt to give it body to stand up.  I used the felt also to give the purse shape.  There was almost no waste with this project.

The top of the brim was made out of a light weight black satin.  The underside of the brim (pictured above) was made out of an lightweight iridescent vinyl fabrication.  I used both fabrics together for the bottom contrast portion of the purse and also for the wristlet strap.

For the bag lining, I used a colorful cotton print given to me by a friend.  It was the perfect compliment with shades of blue, green, purple and yellow. Even the ring I used to attach the wristlet to the bag was upcycled from key ring.

I’m so pleased with the finished wristlet.  It’s the perfect little bag to take out shopping or out to dinner.  Just pop in my phone, a lipstick and a credit card and I’m good to go.

Don’t forget to head over to Blue Calla Patterns and check out all their great bag patterns.  They also carry hardware, interfacings, zippers and more.
