WOW!!  Have I got good news to share with you!!  Not long ago, a member of the Facebook group shared with me that she wore out her Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 and purchased a new one because she loved it so much.  She was kind enough to share photos with me about a few of the visual differences between the 2 machines, but I didn’t really think too much of it at the time.  Internal components change as manufacturers change.  It wasn’t until I started reading about cutters falling out that I started to wonder if there were more differences than met the eye.  So….I ordered a brand new Singer 9960 to see what else was different.  Sure enough, the cutter mechanism was completely different.  Well that explained so much.  No wonder I never experienced any of these cutter issues.  I will go more into the differences between both machines in another article, but this article will focus on repairing the cutter !!!

Here’s the unboxing video of my Brand NEW Singer QS 9960 !!

THIS is the Video you’ve been waiting for!!  How to Repair the Auto Cutter!!!  YES you read that correctly.  How to Repair the Auto Cutter.  As most of you know, I don’t focus on broken features because I’m not a sewing machine repair technician.  I do have a secret to share though…..my husband is a mechanical technician.  I’ve been pestering him for a while to take my machine apart to see how the cutter operates and if the blade can be either reinserted or repaired.  I haven’t ever had any issues with my auto cutter, but many others have.  It’s a favorite feature of this Fabulous machine, so it was worth investigating.  Keep in mind, I have an older machine and some of the internal components look a little different than on newer models.  Well….we found out that my original machine’s cutter can’t be repaired so easily, but the NEW machines can!!  So, if you have a newer machine with a inoperable cutter, this video may be the solution to fixing your auto cutter.

Here’s what you need to look for first:

Original 2011 Singer QS 9960 Cutter

This repair video will not work for the older style cutters.  If your machine looks like the above photo, this repair video will not help.  It’s a totally different mechanism.

New 2020 Singer QS 9960 Cutter

This repair was demonstrated on a newer style machine.  If your cutting mechanism looks like the above photo, this video will help you repair your machine.

***Now I have to offer a disclaimer:  My husband is a mechanical technician and helped me with this video. I would NEVER have attempted this repair video without his assistance.  This repair is not for the faint of heart.  It’s very involved and not easy to do.  I did my best to guide you step by step through this repair.  If you feel at all unsure about performing this repair on your machine after viewing this video, DON’T ATTEMPT THIS REPAIR.  A broken cutter will not usually render a machine inoperable, however NOT being able to put your machine back together properly will.  The plastic housing is NOT easy to remove or replace.  There are hidden tabs that will break off if not handled properly.  If you’re going to attempt this, I suggest you take before photos for reference.
